This month's seminar
WEES lecture Thursday 24 May, 2012
Remco Daalder
Can Ecologists shape Cities?
In this months WEES, something completely different. Remco Daalder will discuss the important role ecology and nature conservation have in the way our cities are formed and shaped. City planners are in constant dialogue with ecologists and biologist, who have clear ideas on how to shape a world of natural splendor. However, how much influence ecological research has on these policies remains to be seen. What scientific data contributes to greener cities? How powerful are ecologists, when it comes to city planning? A fascinating story, straight out of Amsterdam city planning practice.
In the master class, prior to the seminar, students are guided through questions concerning shrinking nature areas. What to do with natural areas around the cities, that keep expanding, and what role can farmers play in sustaining these natural areas?
Remco Daalder is project leader on several important city planning projects in Amsterdam, and author of several books on city planning, and the role ecology plays in this.
